PROFILE

Don Randall MP

Don Randall is the Liberal Member of Parliament for the Federal Seat of Canning. Don was born in the Western Australian wheatbelt town of Merredin on 2 May 1953. His father was a carpenter and Don spent all of his school years in his home town. He has one brother and two sisters.

After completing Year 12 High School, Don moved to Perth and trained as a primary school teacher. He took up his first teaching appointment in 1974 at Wickham. After a break from teaching, when he travelled extensively throughout Europe, Don returned to Western Australia and resumed his teaching career. He taught intellectually handicapped children at Balga and then later on returned to mainstream teaching in a number of locations such as Hillarys, Coolbinia, Girrawheen and Cloverdale.

It was while he was teaching that Don met and married his wife Julie, who is also a teacher, and they now have two children.

In 1993 Don left teaching and contested the safe Labor State seat of Belmont for the Liberal Party.

Whilst not successful in winning the seat from the Labor Party he significantly reduced the incumbent's majority. After that election Don became a Marketing Consultant for an Environmental Company.

In the 1996 Federal Election Don successfully contested the Labor held seat of Swan and he became a very hardworking, popular Liberal Member of Parliament.

Unfortunately the seat was returned to the Labor Party at the1998 Federal Election.

After a close fought campaign against the Labor incumbent Don won the seat of Canning at the November 10, 2001 general election.

Don worked tirelessly over the next three years for the people of Canning and retained his seat. This was achieved on October 9, 2004. Reflecting his hard work and dedication to the people of Canning, Don was returned with a margin of 9.6 per cent up from a wafer thin 0.38 per cent.

Don's interests include horseracing, having at various times been an owner, trainer and breeder of thoroughbred racehorses. He is also an enthusiastic but improving golfer and pursues his other hobby of fishing whenever he can.

Don became the Liberal Member for Canning because he believes in the freedom of choice that the Liberal Party gives you, unlike the other main alternatives. His slogan for the campaign was "You talk, I'll listen".

This is still his slogan as the Member. Don continues to take up the challenge on behalf of the electors of Canning.
